“I delayed asking for help because I had been downplaying my needs. I thought because it wasn’t physical abuse or sexual trauma, it wasn’t enough to get help.” -client
I responded, “It could be worse, but it can also be better.”

As a therapist and coach, I’ve now worked with hundreds of people who allow their emotional and mental health to suffer until they begin to feel depressed or generally anxious, begin abusing substances like alcohol or other drugs, begin questioning their existence, or have suicidal thoughts. Not addressing your mental and emotional pain is similar to not addressing chronic physical pain and wounds.
A physical wound that is not addressed can result in multiple issues, such as an infection, and gets worse over time. That happens when we don’t address our emotional pain and traumas. Emotional pain that is not transformed is transmitted, and we can become hurt people who hurt people or hurt people who just remain hurt, creating hindrances in our emotional growth and self-esteem.
Why do people wait so long?
Some of this can be because of the stigma associated with getting therapy. ” I don’t want people to think I’m crazy.” As a result, people are running in the same circles and cycles of poverty, low-quality toxic relationships, sadness, anger, and isolation. Many people are trying to figure it out themselves but have challenges making changes.
The definition of doing the same thing and expecting a different result is insanity. I don’t say this in a harsh way or tone, but the sad irony of not getting help because one may not want to be seen as crazy can then lead one to become insane due to denying themselves resources and support and not knowing how to get out of the cycle they’re in.
Others may not reach out for support or wait a long time because of messages they’ve been told while growing up in their childhood. This may sound like, “Get over it.” “Figure it out.” “Just pray about it.” Trust me, prayer is so important and has its place; however, in addition to that, God made counselors for a reason.
His scripture says that in the multitude of counselors, there is safety. He also said to buy wisdom, knowledge, and understanding. Ultimately, many of us actually need to be led out of our mental bondage.
Whether you’re that person that has intellectualized why they are where they are but can’t seem to get out of a rut or you are completely oblivious, guidance is needed to make progress.
I believe at the core of people’s desire is to be happy, free, and be the truest and best version of themselves.
You don’t have to experience overt sexual trauma or physical abuse in order for your pain to be valid. Emotional abuse or even being sent the message directly or indirectly that you’re not good enough or not deserving of having a healthy desire is painful.
Those desires can include the need to express your needs and have your needs met, pursue your passions, financial prosperity, good health and wellness, healthy relationships, etc and so on.
I want to disrupt the myth that you must accept what was handed to you in childhood leading you to have an “It is what it is” mentality. Or “this is just my reality” type of mentality where there may be complaining and compartmentalizing but no change.
I encourage you to shift from acceptance to exploration. Explore who you are outside of the pain-filled version of yourself. Explore who you are outside of the negative beliefs you have about yourself or general negative beliefs you’ve developed about people as a result of pain that you’ve experienced in the past.
It is your right to be free and healed to live your blessed life.
What we don’t acknowledge, we can’t change.
